Why Is My Gum Swollen Around One Tooth?

The last thing you need to deal with is a swollen gum. However, if your mouth is red or swollen, your gums are most likely the main thing holding you back. If you notice swelling around one tooth, it could be due to hygienic issues, gum disease or possibly an abscessed tooth.

1. Hygienic issues

Typically, a swollen gum around one tooth is caused by improper brushing and flossing — you are supposed to brush and floss for two minutes, two times a day. If you don’t follow this rule, food can get stuck in your mouth and cause decay and inflammation.

2. Gum disease

If you don’t adequately brush or floss your teeth, over time you will end up with gum disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost half of Americans 30 and older are affected by gum disease.

3. Abscessed tooth

An abscessed tooth usually comes from an untreated cavity (another reason why you need to brush and floss every day!). The bacteria from an untreated cavity spreads and affects your tooth and the gums surrounding it. You can end up losing the tooth if it’s left untreated, so see a professional immediately!

To prevent swollen gums, brush and floss your teeth for two minutes, two times a day. And don’t forget to schedule regular cleanings and checkups with your dentist.
