Ways to Make Dental Hygiene Fun for Kids

Making Dental Hygiene Kid-Friendly

It’s important to inspire children to take care of their teeth and gums at a young age, so they can grow up healthy and strong. Use these tips to keep your little one’s smile shining bright.

Use the Gold Star Program

To make your child feel accomplished and introduce some more fun into their routine, create your own gold star rewards system. You can decorate a poster with teeth, toothbrushes, and floss to represent days of the month. Then, give your child a sticker every time they brush or floss their teeth. Adding a prize at the end of every week or month is optional!

Get Special Toothpaste or Toothbrushes

There are plenty of ADA-recommended toothpaste and toothbrushes on the market — so why not pick up one with your child’s favorite character or color? In addition, consider picking up a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash in a flavor your child enjoys, such as bubblegum or berry.

Lead By Example

Kids often learn by what their parents do or say. So, lead by example and spend time brushing and flossing your teeth with your child. As they become more independent, they’ll take on this habit as their own.

Pick Up Dental-Themed Books or Videos

Educational books can be useful to help your little one grow and learn about a variety of topics — including the importance of keeping their teeth healthy. There are plenty of options available both online and in-stores to choose from — especially if you want to make a fun trip out of picking up a new book.

You can also add fun videos that demonstrate proper dental hygiene, which may give your child something to relate to.

Plan a Day Out After the Dentist

Many children (and adults) fear going to the dentist. However, you can excite your child by planning a special day out just the two of you after their appointment. Whether that’s at their favorite restaurant, museum, or a day at the park or movies. Quality fun time will take their mind off of going to the dentist.
